Endorsement from leading gun safety group cites Michael Bennet’s support for bipartisan gun law that his Republican opponent Joe O’Dea opposes
DENVER (July 29, 2022) – Today, Senator Bennet received a significant endorsement from the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, which promotes gun safety legislation and initiatives. As Colorado’s US Senator, Michael has helped champion common-sense gun reform including the bipartisan gun safety bill signed into law last month.
“Everytown endorsed Michael Bennet for his continued commitment to stand up to the gun lobby and fight for gun safety laws,” explains Bennet for Colorado spokesperson Georgina Beven. “From Columbine to Aurora to Boulder, Coloradans have experienced too many gun-related tragedies and in Michael Bennet they have a senator who will fight to end gun violence in our schools and communities.”
Everytown for Gun Safety endorses candidates based on their work to advance gun safety legislation. In addition to voting for the bipartisan gun safety bill—which will expand background checks for young people, close the “boyfriend loophole,” invest in mental and behavioral health, and improve school safety—Michael advocates for universal background checks, closing the gun show loophole and “Charleston loophole,” and supports Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also known as “Red Flag Laws” to keep guns out of the hands of people who may be a danger to others or themselves.
“Everytown is proud to endorse gun-sense champion Senator Michael Bennet,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, the grassroots arm of Everytown for Gun Safety. “His advocacy and fight to keep our communities safe from gun violence is exactly what Colorado and our country needs now more than ever. Meanwhile his opponent, Joe O’Dea, opposes any new gun safety laws—including the historic bipartisan gun safety bill—and is clearly too far-right for our country and Coloradans. Our grassroots movement of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers are eager to get out the vote and help reelect Michael Bennet this November so he can continue fighting for common-sense gun safety legislation in the US Senate.”
Last month, US Senators came together to pass the bipartisan gun safety bill, 15 Republican Senators joined Democrats to pass the historic legislation and like Shannon mentioned, Joe O’Dea says he opposed it. While Michael is fighting for common-sense legislation to protect our schools and communities, Joe O’Dea is boasting support from the gun lobby and maintains views that are out of step with the values of Coloradans. There is a moral obligation to reelect Michael Bennet this November so he can continue his work to protect Colorado communities from gun violence.
